ARE GOLFING ENSEMBLES GOOD FOR THE GARDEN?

Image
This sonic aqua golfing ensemble is great for gardening in cooler climates, because the aqua is one of my proven blues. Both blues are perfect.  Every golfer should know about wearing the right colors. I've not learned to play golf yet, but what I know about golfing is that distractions from flying bugs can throw off your swing and lead to you breaking your golf club over your knee in frustration. 😖 Fresh off the course?  Head for the garden to get more fresh air, Ladies.  You'll experience a c omfortable time in your garden wearing this ensemble or one similar to it.                                                  Happy Gardening/Shopping today!                      What Adidas has to says:                "Comfort. BIRDS' NESTS IN YOUR GARDEN AREA?... BE WARY

Image
Ladies, watch what you do in your garden when it comes to birds' nests.  I discovered a scripture in the Old Testament, but let's say this first, it's what you KNOW, not what you don't know that God knows about you. Deuteronomy 22:6 (Amp. version) that reads: "If a bird's nest should chance to be before you in the way, in any tree, or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, and the mother bird is sitting on the young or only the eggs, you shall not take the mother bird with the young.  You shall surely let the mother bird go and take only the young that it may be well with you and that you may prolong your days ." I told y'all in the beginning that we are being watched (monitored); however, God sees all, and He looks on our hearts, knowing our motives and intentions, in our gardens and in the fields surrounding our gardens.  He watches how we treat birds  on their nests.  That is a "family," y'all, so let's behave wisely considering

MY PROVEN BLUES

Image
Sky blue is my favorite color.  Recently, I was browsing  Amazon online and saw they sold a sky-blue long-sleeved workout shirt.  I was pleasantly surprised, because I've never seen my favorite color on clothing before. Excitedly, I purchased two of these shirts (one in gray and my favorite blue).    I've tested Aqua-blue, both medium and light tones. Some refer to this hue as "light turquoise." I regularly wear aqua gloves with whitish leather palms made of washable leather.  Oh, believe me, the white doesn't stay white long. This blue works for deterring flying bugs. Steer clear of the purplish blues. In Texas, you may appear to be a Salvia Azurea Blue Sage (wildflower).  Bees LOVE them.  This is a pollinator that can be found according to Wikipedia.org "from Utah east to Connecticut and from Minnesota south to Florida. This wildflower tends to be found in the eastern and southeastern portion of this range..."   Check out my favorite gloves,  if you

ABOUT US

Image
Hi.  Again, my name is Vivian Masterson.  I've been married to a wonderful man named, Victor, for over thirty-nine years.  We have three beautiful adult children, who all live in far-away States.  Thankfully, they're all successful Black-Americans, whom we are very proud of.  The Lord is GOOD.   My husband and I were raised in Michigan.  That's where I started my first flower garden in 1984.  I had great neighbors then. I remember watching Helena, a Polish neighbor, daily sprinkling water over her seedlings in her backyard garden.  She began to share her produce with me and then she passed away.   "Big Ed," rented the house on the opposite side of us.  His dad owned the place. Eddie kept me informed about what my yard used to look like.  I tried so hard to get  it back to its former glory. Hard to do with dogs taking up half my space.  However, we completed the rearing up of our children near Ethridge, Tennessee (Amish Country) where gardening got to be more inten

GOT SLUGS AROUND YOUR GARDEN?

Image
Let toads help you, by feasting on your garden  predators and flying bugs. If your garden has any or all of the bugs below, toads are around (whether you've seen them or not).   Toads will devour SLUGS, CRICKETS, GRASSHOPPERS, LOCUSTS, ROACHES, MEALWORMS, EARTHWORMS,  SUPERWORMS, CALCI-WORMS, HORNWORMS AND WAXWORMS, FLIES, GNATS, DRAIN FLIES, SPIDERS, CENTIPEDES, GRUBS, SNAILS, and MOSQUITOS, so buy or make a toad house for your garden friends.  And let a larger plant hang over it:  tuck it into the brush. Believe it or not, one of mines let me stroke his head between his eyes.  I was so honored.  I am weird?  😏 Remember, if you have plenty of the above listed insects then toads will find your garden.  You don't have to purchase toads.  Creatures always abide near food sources. Welcome toads into your bed 😴 lol...garden bed to help you out at night by investing in; or creating, a Toad House similar to the one below.  It is only 5" high and  7-1/2" in diameter.

HOW TO DEAL WITH A BEE ATTACK

Image
Watch this video, and know your options to "bee" safe, Ladies. Springtime  brings  bee  activity.  Many women have husbands, who know about  wearing  the  right colors outdoors, and that we shouldn't wear perfumes outdoors, because their sportsman.  I don't have such a husband as many  women don't have nature-knowledgeable men in their lives, so t ell your friends about my blog.  My first post goes into  more details about the colors.   (Click on "Colors/Perfumes Matter" in the tab  above.)   Thanks in advance.   However, years ago, I believe I was led of God to  watch/listen to a Master Gardener  before I even had a garden .  That guy expressed  the same rules I've written about in  my blog for coexisting with flying bugs, which  at the time made so  much sense.     Happy Gardening!

CAN WE WHERE HOSPITAL SCRUBS IN THE GARDEN?

Image
Is wearing scrubs mandatory at your job?  Go from dirty to dirtier, feed the kids, cat, and/or dog, and head straight for your garden in your scrubs.  Unless, you'd feel more comfortable removing your scrubs for fear of bringing something highly contagious home.  Otherwise, if your scrub color's  right, you can have a bug-free time outside:  wind-down, relax, and get your necessary vitamin D, Girls. However,  if you want to minimize the presence  of flying bugs you should  steer clear of blues that are the color of any flower.  I'm really sorry about that,  because I love all blues, as well. I  know, the grays are blah and drab, but they  work to keep you comfortable in the garden by being a natural insect repellent. Do a little planting or weed pulling while you're out there.   Oh,  don't forget your airy garden crocks!                                                                                                     HAPPY GARDENING!

FEED THE BUG-EATERS IN YOUR GARDEN

Image
I hung a birdhouse in the corner of that fencing.                                            To be able to work-out or sit in my garden undisturbed by nosy bugs I developed a saying, "If I take care of the birds, they'll take care of me." Thus, there's a whole lot of respect going on while I work-out in my zone. On hot days (or a day when rain hasn't fallen for weeks) bug-eating birds come to my garden to enjoy good non-chlorinated water, as do the squirrels and rabbits.  I think they all look so cute drinking out of my high and ground-level birdbaths.  And I feel so honored to accommodate them. In the beginning, before my garden was completed, I hung two bird feeders with Black Oil Sunflower Seed. I have lots of trees and high grass in the surrounding fields, which are loaded with critters. Our bug-eaters are Cardinals, Bluebirds, Mockingbirds, King Birds, Mourning Doves, flocks of little brown birds, a flock of Robins passing through, an occasionally Blue

GARDEN OUTFITS THAT LOOK LIKE A CRACK OR HOLE IN A WALL?

Image
Be careful, Girls.  Steer clear of choosing garden outfits that bears BLACK or very DARK-BLUE logos,  zippers, spots, stripes, silhouettes, words, or such like.  Why?  Some insects venture i nto cracks and holes in walls of buildings to nest. Your outfit  may look like a place  to explore the possibility. Since the flying bug is exploring, it may  try to land on  you  to  see exactly what you are.   Be safe, Ladies.                                         Happy Gardening!

SKIN-SO-SOFT: DOES IT REALLY WORK?

Image
Haven't used Skin-so-Soft since I was in my late teens when  men were  my focus,  not gardens.  (However, I did help my mom plant plenty of flowers around  her   house.)   Unfortunately, I've always had  sensitive skin.  I tried many   lotions to  see what  I  wasn't   allergic to.    Therefore,  going out of doors wasn't a daily concern as it  is  now at age 65.  However, I  remember many women  swearing that Skin-so-Soft was, also, good  for  keeping mosquitoes away as well as being a great lotion.  I purchased a bottle ( in  the  pic) to give Skin-so-Soft   another spin as a bug-repellent while gardening.    Maybe I'll rub it on  my clothes instead.   Hope it works!  I'll let y'all  know  this  summer.   Who  else  out there swears by this product?  Leave a comment.   Nonetheless, I was impressed with the following information about  Skin-so-Soft   from a fellow-blogger/ Avon dealer.  I thought some of the uses  were kind of  funny.

TRY, TRY AGAIN: DON'T QUIT ON YOUR GARDEN

Image
Whether your garden is on the porch, terrace, balcony, deck, in the window, in  the  ground, or in beds; don't quit.  You'll have a green thumb before you know it.  It  happened to me!  I couldn't grow a common Pothos Ivy or a Lucky Bamboo.   The  Mexican Sunflower  (Tithonia)  below is one my favorites, because it draws  beautiful  butterflies to my garden space.         "Our Greatest weakness lies in giving up.  The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time."   - Thomas Edison -

DIANA AND VIC FOUND A BEE'S NEST IN THEIR GARDEN AREA

Image
It’s springtime in Southern USA and like many of us, the bees can’t wait to get out  of their homes. You might see a sign of our striped friends in a nearby tree, or even  gathered on fencing. Earlier this week we found this swarm hanging off a branch: But don’t be alarmed! These bees are simply in the process of colony  reproduction. When the colony becomes too large for its home it votes to decide if  the colony should expand. If the bees collectively decide it’s a good idea, they go  into  prepping for their trip.  The queen lays a bunch of queen eggs, and then fasts  to  get  smaller (she can fly better this way).  Meanwhile, the other bees gorge  themselves  on  honey to make sure they stay full over the coming days. Once ready,  the original  queen and half of the colony fly off looking for a new home. The first  baby queen to  emerge will become the next leader of the colony and is left behind.    The expedition for a new home starts fairly slowly. The queen can only fly a short

COMFY WORKOUT JEANS FOR GARDENING!

Image
Ladies, we know sometimes your favorite jeans can be binding cutting into you; and after some time in them they can brand you like a cow.  Look what I found for y'all while breezing through a new Blair catalog (March 2022).  Some may hate Blair products, but bear with me, please. These denim jeans are perfect for leg protection on tougher jobs in your garden!  This item comes in Quarry-Gray, Medium and Light-Washed:  great blues and gray, for detouring flying bugs.  Personally, I wear knee-high rubber boots, so the length is not that important to me.  However, the maximum length is a 29-1/2" inseam.  This may be too short for you, BUT the new trend is to roll them up anyway. They offer them in  a cool capri, rider's boot-cut, and breezy wide-leg styles (Misses, Womens, and Petite sizes).  Denim that's "so soft you can sleep in them ," and yet they are made of tough denim w/spandex!  These soft jeans boast five real pockets, but the fly is faux (easy on

BEST TYPE OF ACTIVE WEAR SPORT BRA FOR GARDENING

Image
I  can see much SUPPORT with this type of active wear bra, because of the high neck.  Just think, no cleavage hangs/stretches when leaning over (planting or seeding), in your gardening workouts.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              If I were to purchase this particular bra,  I'd button down to my belly an oversized cotton shirt and tie it up. The back of the shirt will hang over my hips: feminize that big shirt. Covered in cotton-coolness that works with a pair of loose-fitting rolled up jeans with my big brim Raffia straw hat w/chin cord. That's it! I'm ready for the intense Texas sun without wearing sunscreen and bug repellent every day while gardening and/or mowing. (Sunscreens give me hives.  (Does anyone else get hives from

DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING OUT THERE?

Image
The above picture is where the local coyote brought his kill to devour or bury it.  I removed lots of brush burned and/or chopped it up.  Normally, when people see a woman work that hard alone (wearing her husband's clothes) they assume she is a ruffian. Don't let that happen to you. Ladies, you're being watched by your neighbors in your garden. They beg the question:  "Does she know what she's doing?" For me, the answer was, yes.  However, I was "the new kid on the block," so who knew? Above is a before picture of my garden space.  The After picture is at the end of this post. # 1 stay humble, because you don't know everything about gardening, but you're willing to learn.  Therefore, be friendly as possible.  You may have to ask for prayer. #2 be committed to whatever you've started:  don't quit. Be willing to search-out advice. #3 if your plant starts to die, show concern #4 it's possible the plant doesn't like that

GREAT COMFY PLUS-SIZED GRAY PANTS FOR GARDENING

Image
Kohl's is offering an excellent pair of plus-sized (1X-5X) loose fitting summer pants in GRAY.  Boasting, not only, 2 large open side pockets for packs of seeds, but an extra down the leg w/flap (this is where I'd park my cellphone combined w/a blue tooth or buds) to float comfortably in the garden. If you're not busty, you can easily wear a cool cropped tee.  Busty women should tuck a tee and look great, as well.  Work out, Girl!                                                                                 Happy Shopping/Gardening today!

ACTIVE WEAR: FOR THE GARDEN WORK-OUT

Image
Because   To HAUL, we LIFT then dump. To plant we BEND and SQUAT. KNEEL then RISE to our feet. WALKING a mile to spread seeds. To clean our beds, we STRETCH. From Spring to Fall we REACH and sweat. At the end the day, we smile and say, "What a Workout!"  poem by Viv                                                                                         These pants are pocketed moisture-wicking capris.  Love the color for the garden workout.  One thing that I don't like about wearing capris in my garden (for a longtime in the intense Texas sun) is the darker tan line I get across my calves. 😖  Add a moisture-wicking GRAY or LIGHT blue tunic-tee to cover the hips and upper-thighs.  That's me (below) covering my buttocks and upper thighs, as well. (below)

GARDENERS, WELCOME THE BARN SWALLOW: "THE FARMER'S FRIEND"

Image
Barn Swallows: "The Farmer's Friend": How and why is that?  Glad you asked.  Again, if you take care of the birds, they'll take care of you.  The problem is WHERE they may want to place a nest.   For us, it was high above the front entry doorway nestled in the lower corner of a brick arch.  It was scary, because at the time she'd feed or sit on the eggs I could be coming in or out of the doorway. I experienced male and female birds darting over my head on my exits and entries.  It was only God that led me not to have my husband tear down their nest. Instead, I Googled the bird's description.  Then I was very happy to oblige.  And to know they didn't want to hurt me.  I was only scaring them. Has anyone else noticed that many species of bird are placing their nest in more secure places like your carport or on your porch. Anything other than a tree. Leave a comment on that. (I found plenty of ruined nest on the ground with broken eggs, in Tennessee.) Mayb

GUESS I'LL BE WELCOMING THIS MONSTER INTO MY GARDEN SPACE SOON: THE JORO SPIDER

Image
According to an article, the Joros spider has invaded Georgia. Maximum size of female 3 to 4 inches.  It flies on its webs for up to 100 miles, Girls!!  It looks like something out of the movie, "The Mist." One female gardener posted on Facebook from GA that she opened her back door to exit and found this spider and its web over her entire entry doorway   When it reaches Texas, I'll have to live with this hideous thing.  It is a bug-eater.  Eating the bugs that most other spiders avoid:  our stink bugs. And it will be good to have another mosquito-lover in the neighborhood.  Knowledge is power.  God, forbid it builds a web over my doorway, though. The Trichonephila Clavata (sci-name) is beautiful in its own way.  Bright-colored creatures are most times poisonous.  Good to know it is NOT poisonous for humans.   True Story: We rented a cabin in the woods of North Georgia. My window was cracked open about four inches.  I like the fragrance of the night forest. Suddenly, m

IF YOU HATE THE FLYING BUGS IN YOUR GARDEN...GOOD NEWS!!

Image
Good news!  This is information I received from a Master Gardener on television decades ago. Color is key, besides fragrances (soaps, lotions, oils, underarm and feminine deodorants, etc.).  You don't want to look and/or smell like flowers in your garden.  These are the things that draw bugs to you.  You are right...flying critters don't see well. What are the RIGHT COLORS for gardening?  Look up at the sky.  Your clothing should make a bug think he's flying up into the sky thus it will change direction when coming your way.  Light blues and lighter grays tones.  NO white, anywhere. Remember, you don't want to look like a streetlight at night either.  Yes, clouds are very bright white sometimes.  Yes, you are free to wear white, if you choose and don't mind swatting flying bugs. Flies love white. And remember, white shows fly vomit. Black is definitely OUT for gardening in spring and summer. The Master Gardener said that "bugs like shade too" (especially m
